UPDATE: Overnight house fire in Elkhart

An overnight fire in Elkhart is being blamed on clothing on a dresser placed too close to a light bulb.

The fire happened at a home in the 300 block of Jackson Place in Elkhart around 2:30 Friday morning.

The Elkhart Fire Department says seven people were in the home, which had no working smoke detectors. Investigators say one of the children heard some popping noises and got up to investigate what was happening.

Investigators say the fire did about $28,000 in damage.

Investigators say one adult in the home had minor blisters on his hand from trying to put out the fire with a blanket.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
