Silver Hawks vendor brings energy to every game

Posted:

South Bend Silver Hawks fans all love chanting it, but no one says 'peanuts and cracker jacks' better than Anthony Allen.

Allen, or "Tony the Beer Man" as the fans know him, has been serving the stands of the Cove for four seasons. It didn't take long for people to notice him and even on a rainy Friday night at the ball game, he was keeping the crowd into the game. He says that's just part of who he is.

"I'm just an upbeat person. I mean don't nothing get me down," said Allen.

The Cove isn't the first place Allen grabbed the attention of the crowd. He's been a vendor since 1984, serving sports fans from everywhere from Wrigley Field to the Metrodome. Allen says he's learned the tricks of the trade at every stop he's made.

"I'm not just here to sell you beer or cracker jacks or peanuts," said Allen. "I'm giving you a show. I'm giving you a nine inning vacation."

Allen says he moved to South Bend to be closer to his children.

Fans aren't the only ones who have taken notice of Allen's enthusiasm. Joe Hart, the President of the Silver Hawks, says he's one of the Silver Hawks's best employees.

"When you're walking outside the ballpark and he's piping it out you know you got somebody special," said Hart. "I'd like to have 200 Tony's."

Allen says even when he's at his other job, stocking the produce at Wal-Mart, people point him out.

"I could be walking down the street or anywhere and I'll hear my chant," said Allen.

He says he doesn't mind being noticed though because it usually means more money in his pockets at the game.

"It takes care of four kids (laughs)," said Allen.

Allen says it's not the money that keeps him around though, it's the fans.

"I didn't think it'd get this big, but since its here I'm going to enjoy and I'm going to make sure they enjoy," said Allen.

Allen says on an average night he usually refills his tray three times because he sells so much product.
