New SR 19 detour could impact drivers already detoured

Posted:

Beginning Tuesday, July 30th, the Indiana Department of Transportation will close Franklin Street, also called Old US 33, west of State Road 19.

It's part of the State Road 19 Restructuring Project in Elkhart.

Workers will be realigning the intersection. The closure is expected to last 50 days.

The local traffic detour will be Lexington Avenue to Bypass Road to Ash Road.

Some drivers in the area fear the closure could trap them in, considering Lincolnway East is already closed just west of Ash Road.

"I don't know why anyone would even come this direction then because you have no way to go except over the railroad tracks which is half the time blocked by a train so everybody's gonna go the other direction which will cause more traffic that way," says Greg Longacre of Osceola.

Crews there are replacing the Baugo Creek Bridge. The road has been closed since April.

"I pretty much waste a good 45 minutes to an hour because of all the road construction that's been going on here lately," says driver Tim Price of Jimtown.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says it's necessary work, but unfortunately the road won't reopen any time soon.

"It's something we're working very quickly on to get finished as quickly as possible, but taking down an old bridge and putting up a brand new bridge takes time, so unfortunately we're going to have to wait until the end of October to get this finished for folks," says Matt Deitchley with INDOT.
