Police destroy suspicious package near Elkhart business


Elkhart police have a destroyed a possible explosive found near a business on Adams St. near Woodlawn Ave.

Police got a call about a suspicious object shortly after 8:00am on Tuesday.  When they arrived, they found something wrapped in "clear nylon packaging tape with a fuse attached.  It was found outside a fence that ran along Adams St.

Lami Plast employee Gregory Sierra says he found the object. "I was picking up a little bit of trash to throw it in a dumpster and came back and I reached down to pick up this ball of tape it looked like. It had a fuse sticking out of the bottom of it and I was holding it and just dropped it instantly cause I knew what it was and took off running."

The Elkhart bomb squad destroyed the item.  They believe it was homemade fireworks.
