Schools remind parent of new chicken pox vaccine requirement

It won't be long before the kids head back to school and there's a new requirement for a second dose of the chickenpox vaccine this year.

Kids in grades kindergarten through 12th grade need to have a record documenting two valid doses of the chickenpox vaccine or a record of having the childhood disease.

The state health department says Indiana had multiple chickenpox outbreaks during the past school year and the new requirement will help stop the spread of the disease.

There are a few other vaccines that are recommended but not required.  Those recommendations are: two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine, an annual flu vaccine, human papilloma virus vaccine for all adolescents, and a booster dose of meningitis vaccine for adolescents ages 16-18
