Toxicology results say the Lakeville Police Reserve Officer killed in a crash in Lakeville had alcohol and drugs in his system.

28-year-old Danny Cox was killed in the July 25 crash in the 67200 Block of Lake Trail. Officers say his silver car appears to have lost control and slid off the road sideways into a tree.

Lakeville Police Chief Richard Jaronik said in a written statement that Cox "was still currently on the roster at the time of his death.  However, he had not actively worked for the Department for a considerable period of time."

The Saint Joseph County Police Department says toxicology results showed Cox had a blood alcohol level of approximately .16, twice the legal limit. Police say he also tested positive for marijuana and cocaine.

"Drug use on or off duty has never been, nor will it ever be, tolerated by the Lakeville Police Department," said Chief Jaronik.  "As a result of this extremely unfortunate incident, the Lakeville Police Department has implemented a new, stricter drug screening policy in order to ensure that this does not happen again."

Police say they are continuing to investigate the crash.
