Brian Kelly excited for new season & "new team"

Posted: Updated:

Coach Brian Kelly says there's a lot of excitement for the upcoming season, but also a lot of work to be done. Kelly says the team is committed to getting back to the BCS Championship game.

Kelly said the team moved past the situations with Everett Golson and Manti Te'o the day after they happened.  "This is a new team, you can't live in the past." Kelly added there are no distractions now and its all football.  Kelly had high praise for the incoming freshmen, saying they are the most prepared class his strength coaches have seen.

The biggest question about the new season is who will be leading the team for the season.  Kelly talked up quarterback Tommy Rees who he says has the most experience, has won, knows offense well and is well respected. Kelly did however add Rees has only been named starter for week one, not necessarily the whole season.  Kelly said one particular thing  Rees needs to do a better job of is taking care of the football.

With regards to the running backs, Kelly said there's some talented young men on the team, and they'll see how it plays out. He says the backs who show the ability to make plays will get their touches.

Kelly is very excited about the team's defense this year because of depth and players who can contribute at a high level.

Kelly wasn't interested in talking about the possible stadium changes, saying he was more excited about the "little things happening day to day to make the program better."

Additional Quotes from Kelly:

on Freshman QB Malik Zaire: "We want him to see what the starters see, we'll keep him with us."

on TJ Jones jumping in with sharks: "Excited, if he's willing to do that, he's willing to go over the middle and catch a ball."

on Louis Nix: "It's his chance to leave his mark and help lead his team back to the national championship."

on Bon Jovi's son: He's had a relationship with Notre Dame back to Coach Weis. He's earned his spot on roster. Not seen as rock stars son.
