Friday's rain keeps ASA Softball Tournament off the fields

No one liked to see Friday morning's games get delayed at the ASA Men's Major Tournament, especially Jim Byers.

When the rain started pouring down, he knew his grounds crew was in for a long day.

"Its been a tough day," said Byers, Belleville Softball Complex Superintendent of Maintenance. "We got everything in last night and it looked good and then it rained basically until 1:00 pm"

When the rain stopped they scrambled to get the fields ready as fast as they could. Raking away the water and putting new lines on the field.  A couple hours later they were ready to go.

"We added a material called quick dry, then we added a little turface to it," said Byers. Basically mother nature has got to help you and we got a break. The sun came out and it got windy that helps a lot. But you got to rake it in and it takes some work."

The fields weren't the only thing that needed work, the schedules all had to be redone because of the weather. Thankfully though, tournament organizers had planned ahead some incase the weather didn't hold up.

"You build in a little fluff time here every now and then for this kind of situation," said John Walczewski, tournament director.

By 4:00PM they were playing ball (games were scheduled to start at 9:00AM and everyone had the same thought on their mind.

"Just keep it from raining again," said Byers a little bit after 4:00PM. "That's all I can ask."

But as they say, you can't always get what you want. Just before 5:00PM Friday the rain started pouring down again and the rest of the day's games were canceled.

The tournament will resume Saturday morning. More information can be found here:
