Condos could change On the River's location in the future

Thousands of people are expected to attend "On The River", a big fundraiser for the Center for the Homeless this weekend in South Bend. But where will the event be next year?

A developer is planning to put condos on the site where the event is currently held and it looks like that could happen soon. Organizers said this is no way the end of On the River.

The event has been going on for six years now and organizers say they've known all along that someone could come along and develop the land. So they know they need a back up plan.

Teens at On the River Friday night say they're happy the event exists because it gives them something to do.

Anna said, "I think it's good, I'm getting bored in the middle of the summer."

Deonya said, "It's pretty cool. People can just hang out pretty much, meet a lot of people and have fun."

The event, that creates a beach in Downtown South Bend does more than just entertain people. It's a major money maker for the Center for the Homeless.

Emily Sims, with the Center for the Homeless said, "This is our third largest fundraiser. "

The goal for this year is to raise $50,000 for the center that would go to multiple programs the center runs.

"All of our 275 guest we serve each day as well as programming and operating costs," said Sims.

So the Center for the Homeless certainly wants to see the event continue, but a developer is now planning to build two towers of luxury condos on the very lot On The River uses. The website says the plan is to have people living in the condos next year.

For On the River this would just mean a move.

Garrett Gingerich, with On The River said, "If they do decide to build then we have contingency plans and back up plans that we've been exploring for the past years."

Event organizers said it absolutely would not mean the end of On the River.

"There's a lot of people intimately involved in this event that do not want to see it die," said Gingerich.

The lot is currently privately owned and the owner just lets organizers take it over for On The River, so they've always known they could be booted.

"It's a double edged sword. We would love to have our event here forever, but for the greater impact of the community it'd be great to have a development here," said Gingerich.

If the event has to move organizers say it'll just be a "rejuvenation" of the event. That's good for the event's benefactor, the Center for the Homeless

"It'd be fun to see how we could transform a new space in town," said Sims

Event organizers said they haven't heard of any definite plans for the luxury condos yet. They're just sitting back and waiting to see what happens.

The developer did not respond to requests for plans as to when the condos will be completed, but their website said the condos are slated for occupancy in 2014.
