Dogs credited for saving family after devastating Osceola fire

Two family dogs are being credited for saving five people in Osceola after a Monday morning fire ripped through their home.

It broke out at 3:39am on the 300 block of Walnut Street. Osceola Fire Chief Walter Tochman says he was the first one on the scene and by the time he got there the home of the Scheittecatta family was fully involved. When the smoke cleared, only the frame of the house remained.

The family of five was at home when the blaze broke out, including two children. Tochman says the dogs woke them up and though the kids were treated on the scene, they are all alive and well.

"The fire started on the west side of the house and they were on the east side of the house with their mother. They got all of them out through the window," Tochman said.

Crews stayed on the scene for hours after the fire on Monday. It could be a few weeks before we know what caused the blaze.
