City tax proposal to appear on Benton Harbor ballot

Residents and employees in Benton Harbor could see an increase in their tax burden come November.

The Benton Harbor city council voted 6 to 2 with one abstain to put a city income tax proposal on the November ballot.

If it passes, residents would pay a one percent tax on income.  Non-residents who work in the city would also pay a tax.  It would only be one-half a percent for them.

Proponents argue the tax will help eliminate some of the city's debt.  Those who oppose it say it will drive out businesses and workers.
