Softball World Series Champions has a nice ring to it and the Senior League girls from South Bend are more than happy to put that title next to their names.

With a big 5-1 win over Italy, the District 11 South Bend Senior League Girl's Softball team won the World Series. The game was nationally televised on ESPN.

"It feels awesome to be champions," said head coach Derek Hicks, in a phone interview with FOX28. "The girls are all really excited. I don't know if it's sunk in yet, but they're all smiles. It's for all of South Bend. We had sponsors that came in last minute and helped with travel. The whole community wins by this and those girls really represented it well."

South Bend was tied with Italy 1-1 going into the bottom of the 4th, but were able to capitalize on some great opportunities. The girls from South Bend were able to drive in four runs that inning and then hold Italy scoreless the rest of the way.

The team is made up of All-Stars from all of the South Bend schools, New Prairie and Marian.

They had already beaten the Italian team in pool play prior to Saturday's big win.
