UPDATE: South Bend playground fire still under investigation

Posted:

Officials in South Bend have received admission from 3 children regarding a fire that happened near Harrison Primary Center on Saturday morning.

Police tell us that 2 5-year-olds and a 6-year old got a hold of a parent's lighter before apparently setting the playground on fire.

Although the children admitted to setting the fire, it is still under investigation.

Police also tell us that since the children are so young, there is very little prosecution they can do, but it will probably be recommended that seek help by talking to a professional.

The South Bend Fire Department is investigating a school playground fire that happened Saturday morning.

A little after 10:30 am, fire crews were dispatched to Harrison School Playground on West Western Avenue.

Officials say they arrived to find playground equipment on fire, as well as the rubber mats covering the ground.

Officials estimate that there is about $10,000 worth of damage to the playground.

No one was injured in the fire and it is still under investigation.

The flames left part of the playground in ruins. Pieces were melted and charred.

People in the community can't believe this happened.

Jasmine Escalante, who saw the fire happen says, "It was made for little kids to play and have something to do on their lunch break but the fact that they ruined it now they'll have nothing to play with. It's sad."

Dawn Jones is a South Bend School Corporation Board Trustee. She says that when she pulled up, "I was like wow...I didn't realize it was this much damage."

Jones also says the playground will be fixed as soon as possible and school will still start as scheduled.
