UPDATE: US 33 reopened after deadly Elkhart County crash

Posted:

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department is investigating a deadly crash.

It happened on US 33 near County Road 146.

Police say a minivan driven by 47-year-old Cynthia Gilleo of Celina, Ohio was traveling north on US 33 Sunday afternoon.

That's when police say Pontiac Grand Prix, heading south and driven by 31-year-old Sarah Fields of Elkhart crossed the center line and hit the minivan nearly head-on.

Police says Gilleo was killed in the crash.

Fields and two other passengers in the minivan were flown to the hospital for numerous injuries.

The fire department had to use the jaws of life to get everyone out of the vehicles.

Police say the force of the crash caused the minivan to land in the yard of a nearby home, but didn't cause any damage to the property.

US 33 was closed while emergency crews worked, but has seen been reopened.

Duane Mast, who lives near the crash site, said he's never seen anything this bad.  "Not in the 9 years we've lived here.  Most of the incidents out here are like a dear and vehicle incident, usually those are the worst and most of the time they're most unfortunate for the deer. "
