The ultimate fate of the current stoplight-plagued U.S. 31 through Kokomo is uncertain as the new bypass around the city nears completion.
The Indiana Department of Transportation will renumber the current road to U.S. 931 once the bypass opens this winter, but wants to eventually turn the road over to the city to oversee and maintain.
Mayor Greg Goodnight say that most people want improvements made to the current road. He won't discuss specific plans since no deal's been reached for the city to take it over.
The state has paid millions of dollars to some cities for maintenance of highways it's given up.
Kokomo's new bypass is part of a $1.2 billion reconstruction for sections of U.S. 31 between Indianapolis and South Bend.
