Teen could face adult charges of animal cruelty & robbery

Posted:

An Elkhart teen could be charged as an adult in connection to an animal cruelty case and a robbery from this past June.

The Elkhart County prosecutor says the a pitbull had a firecracker go off in her mouth.  The dog had reportedly picked it up after it was thrown at her.  The injuries were so severe that she was euthanized.

The prosecutor's office believes a 16-year-old was responsible.  FOX28 is not releasing the name of the accused teen, pending adult charges.

The same teen is also a suspect in a robbery from June 13.  He is believed to be one of three people who robbed a person at gunpoint.

The prosecutor is asking for the teen to be charged as an adult in both cases.  "My review of the circumstances surrounding these investigations and leading up to the Petitions for Delinquency in both matters leads me to believe that the juvenile justice system will not benefit (the suspect), and that it is in the best interest of the safety and welfare of this community that he stand trial as an adult," Hill stated.

The teen has been in custody since July 8 on an unrelated matter.  A hearing is scheduled for August 13.
