Niles Salvation Army has excess of backpacks to give away

Not everyone can afford new tech products for back to school. Sometimes just the basic supplies can be difficult to get, but the Niles Salvation Army wants to help.

For the past 8 years, they've been helping kids get ready for back to school with school supply-stocked backpacks.

Now, so far their numbers are lower than in past years, but they want to remind you that the backpacks are still available.

Only about one third of the 160 to 200 kids that usually sign up, actually did this year.

"We're lighter than that now, but that's ok, so long as the needs are being met somewhere if not here," says Jan Nowak, Director Of Caring Ministries For Social Services.

As long as the Niles Salvation Army has backpacks, parents can still sign up to get some for their kids.

If you're interested in applying for a backpack full of supplies for your child, bring your picture ID, yours and your child's Social Security cards, and proof that your child is in school (a report card, etc). The Niles Salvation Army is located at 424 North 15th Street and their hours are from 9 to 4.
