Police warn of Animal Shelter impersonator

The LaPorte County Sheriff's Department and County Animal Control are warning of an impersonator striking neighborhoods.

A woman from Galena Township said a man in a white van drove up to her home while she was working outside, claimed to work for animal control, and said he needed to speak about her livestock.  The man warned her about the size of their enclosure and said she had 48 hours to make improvements or the animals would be removed.

The LaPorte County Animal Shelter says they don't even have a white van.  All their vehicles are marked with "LaPorte County Animal Control" on the doors, and staff wear photo IDs on their clothing.

The suspect was described as 5'9" and 180lbs with dark hair and a black mustache.  The woman said the hair may have been dyed black.

Reports of similar incidents have come out of Porter and Allen Counties recently.  If a similar situation happens to you, police say you should call 911 immediately.

If in doubt about a person claiming to be with Animal Control, ask for their photo ID.  You can also call the Animal Shelter at 219-326-1637 or the Sheriff's Office at 219-326-7700.
