Benton Harbor Area Schools could see security changes

Security changes could be coming to Benton Harbor Area Schools.

Right now the district has a team of 12 people on its security team, although now they're looking to reduce that number to seven.

The 7-person team will be fully staffed by reserve police officers.

Right now there are only four reserve officers securing the schools. The plan would save the district about $150,000.

The superintendent of Benton Harbor Area Schools, Dr. Leonard Seawood says, "It's part of a bigger plan. We're just not using security to create this environment we're using things like policy and alternative schools along with building relationships. So it's part of a bigger plan."

The board didn't vote on the new security plan Tuesday night because there were not enough board members present.

They'll meet again on August 20th.
