Elkhart students heading back to class at different times

Elkhart students are back in class Wednesday morning, and they'll be hitting that alarm at a different time than they're used to.

High school students will be showing up to class 20 minutes earlier this year, at 7:30 a.m. Elementary school kids, on the other hand, get to sleep in a little later. They'll go to school at 8:45 which is 20 minutes later than last year.

Middle school students will not notice a substantial difference. Like the high schoolers, they'll be in class at 7:30. That's five minutes earlier than in previous years.

The result of the move is that elementary students get 70 more minutes of class time each day. Kids in the district will also qualify for the federal extended day snack program.
