Quick thinking bus driver helps avoid fire

Posted:

The following is a press release from Elkhart Community Schools:

Quick action by Alta Beers, driver of Bus 88 for Elkhart Community Schools, meant that smoke did not turn into a fire.

Beers was driving her afternoon route delivering students home from Mary Beck Elementary when she saw smoke coming from the outside of the back of the bus. She safely pulled off the street near 8th and Franklin, then followed safety procedures.

Children were evacuated to a safe area, and the central transportation department was contacted. With children off and away from the bus, the driver verified that a shorted-out exterior light was causing the smoke. Boys and girls were safely delivered home on an alternate bus.

Bus 88 had been inspected this summer by the Indiana State Police. Like all vehicles, buses can develop unanticipated problems. Thankfully, school bus drivers are regularly trained in how to respond to those problems.

School officials are contacting families of students who were on the bus at the time of the incident.

The faulty wiring was repaired, and Bus 88 is ready to return to service Monday morning.

Good job, Alta!
