Crews begin work to demolish Elkhart Armory

Crews have started work on the demolition of the old Elkhart Armory.

Workers started preparations for the demolition on Monday. The work includes removing some decorative items that will be saved. The actual demolition could begin on Tuesday.

Denny Correll, with Elkhart Economic Development, says the city wanted to save as much of the architectural facade as possible. They will be saving corner pieces along with the sign. "It's very important to a lot of people to know it did exist and will be somewhat remembered."

The Elkhart Redevelopment Commission had hoped to save the building, which was in bad shape, including a cave-in of part of the roof. In July, the Commission rejected two plans submitted for restoring the building.
