Vigil for Kristyana Jackson

A little girl was remembered Monday in Elkhart.

People gathered to celebrate seven-year-old Kristyana Jackson's life at a vigil at the Jackson's home. Kristyana and her mom were returning home from a football game last August...

when they walked in on a burglary.

Kristyana and her dad, John, were shot.

The little girl died at the hospital while her dad survived.

The family says having all these people take time out to pay their respects is just overwhelming.

They say it's helping with the healing process.

"I always told her I would protect her. No matter what," said Kristyana's dad John Jackson. "Sometimes it would be in a joking manner but I always told her that. And for me not to be able to do that that night that's something I've got to live with for the rest of my life."

There are no suspects in custody. Jackson hopes those responsible will own up to what they did.

In the meantime, the family tries to remember the good times with Kristyana.
