Law enforcement encourages sober driving before holiday weekend

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over-- Chances are you've heard that -- the slogan for a nationwide program to crack down on drinking and driving.

The St. Joseph County Traffic Safety Partnership will be out in force from now until after Labor Day...

The partnership includes police from Mishawaka, Elkhart County and St. Joseph County--

They want people to be aware of multiple D.U.I. checkpoints that will be out there.

It's no coincidence that Labor Day is right around the corner... a holiday that can be particularly dangerous.

Lt. Tim Williams with Mishawaka Police says, "If you're going to go out and drink, make that decision before you even go out to leave the keys at home, and plan on taking a cab or riding with somebody that's sober."

During a sobriety checkpoint this past Friday at Twykenham and Angela, they pulled over 112 cars and only one drunk driving arrest was made.

Lt. Williams says research shows highly visible campaigns like this reduce drunk driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.
