Mishawaka Police and Fire help kids back to school safely

The School City of Mishawaka started classes on Tuesday, and on Wednesday Penn Harris Madison Schools will follow suit.  It's a sure bet that Mishawaka's sidewalks will be full of kids walking to and from school this week.

That's why Mishawaka's police and fire departments are beefing up their presence on the city's streets. Last year the departments teamed up for Project "Cool Your Engines." The goal is to get everyone to obey the speed limit in school zones.

"We also want drivers to get off your cell phones," Lieutenant Tim Williams told FOX28 last year. "Remember there's no phone call, there's no text that's worth accidentally running over a child."

Mishawaka Fire Captain Brian Linson II tells us fire trucks will be set up in school zones this year with the message "School is back in session. Please slow down," on signs.

Most school zone speed limits in Mishawaka are 20 miles per hour.
