WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A State Representative has officially decided to throw her name in the ring to be a U.S. Representative.

State Rep. Anesa Kajtazovic announced her candidacy for Bruce Braley's open seat in the first congressional district Tuesday at the Black Hawk Democratic headquarters in Waterloo.

Kajtazovic is a Bosnian immigrant who arrived in Iowa in 1997 and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa.

If elected, she said she will focus on restoring the middle class, supporting job growth policies and campaign finance reform.

"I got into public service because I believe it's about the people, and I want to help the people and make it better and that's why I went around listening to the people, talking to every single county before I made my final decision," Kajtazovic said. "Because it should really be about the people and running a grassroots campaign effort and not Washington consultants."

She joins the growing list of candidates to announce their interest in the race.

Former Iowa Speaker of the House Pat Murphy of Dubuque, Cedar Rapids councilwoman Monica Vernon, Democratic state senator Swati Dandekar, and Cedar Rapids attorney Dave O'Brien are also running as Democrats.

On the Republican side, Rod Blum and businessman Steve Rathje have already announced they are running.
