Many students head back to school

Thousands of local students headed back to school today.

Penn Harris Madison is one of the school districts that started the new school year.  Their biggest change - a two million dollar investment in security.

"I think it makes us one of the safest school districts in the state, probably one of the safest school districts in the country, and that's our goal to make sure everyone feels physically safe and psychologically safe," says Dr. Jerry Thacker, Superintendent for PHM.

South Bend schools started the year today as well.  School officials say students and parents are excited to embark on a new year.

"Parents are always anxious, they want to make sure students feel comfortable in the school, and students are ready, they're a little nervous but they're excited to be back with their friends," says Carmen Williams, principal of Jefferson Intermediate.

That's not all, many schools in Michigan also started the new year earlier today.
