The South Bend Anti-Violence Commission holds meeting to update their progress

Posted:

South Bend's Anti-Violence Commission met on Wednesday morning to focus on crime reduction strategies studied by a delegation of commission members at The City University of New York's John Jay College of Criminal Justice in June.

During the trip, delegates met with Professor David Kennedy.  Kennedy's approach, outlined in his book "Don't Shoot," calls for local, state, and federal law enforcement and prosecutors to focus crime-prevention efforts on groups most associated with gun violence.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg believes this is more then just a program, it is a change in the way South Bend should approach violent crime.  "This is a strategy that should outlive me," Buttigieg said, "it should outlive the present police administration and become part of the fabric of how South Bend addresses violent crime, because when you do it right, you can cut violent crime by thirty to forty percent."

The commission will be doing "call ins" in the future, where they approach and explain to the most violent groups, the consequences of committing violent crimes in South Bend, and the ways they can keep themselves out of trouble.
