UPDATE: Fire under control at apartment complex in Buchanan

Posted:

(Updated 8/21/2013 9:15 PM) -- FOX28's Amanda Tetlak reports the fire at the Parkside Terrace Apartment Complex in Buchanan is now under control.

Authorities say a resident called to report a grease fire around 7:00 PM.  The resident thought the fire was under control, but it then spread through the roof and to other units in the building.

When fire crews arrived they reported heavy smoke and flames.

Several Berrien County fire departments responded to the scene on North Redbud Trail.  Our crew says the fire was still burning about an hour after the fire was called in to dispatch.

Home video from Lucy Shely in Buchanan shows thick black smoke could be seen from blocks away from the complex.

A neighbor tells FOX28's Amanda Tetlak she lives in an apartment across from the building that caught fire.  She says she was in her kitchen when she saw smoke moving her way.  She says the heat was so strong, she could feel it through her kitchen window.  She escaped her apartment with her children.

No injuries have been reported, but about 35 people have been displaced from their homes.  The Red Cross is on the scene helping the victims who lost all of their belongings in the fire.  There were 16 units in the building that burned.  15 of them were occupied.

We'll have a full report on FOX28 News at 10.
