Full demolition begins on Elkhart historic landmark

Posted:

Demolition is finally underway on the armory in Downtown Elkhart.   Crews officially started tearing down the building on Wednesday.

Elkhart city historian Paul Thomas says the Armory served as many different things in its time.  It was a garage in the early 1900s, then became a grocery store and eventually a liquor store.

Thomas says most people will remember it as something much more fun, though.  "The thing that made it famous was a roller rink.  There was a roller rink upstairs, and many, many of us from the 30s to the late 60s, early 70s skated up there."

Earlier this week, crews took down decorative features of the armory, including the sign so they could be salvaged.
