Ladders stolen from local artists painting mural

Posted:

If you've driven in or out of South Bend on 933 lately chances are you've noticed a group of artists painting a mural on one of the bridges.  Well now their progress has hit a roadblock.  The group noticed the ladders were missing when they showed up for work Wednesday.

We're told someone clipped some wire and a lock and made off with six ladders.  Artist Samantha Stackowicz said it will cost $650 to replace the ladders.  They're needed since it's pretty hard to paint a bridge without them.  "It is a little disappointing and it is a little shocking, especially in such a public location. Given the nature of this project being a community-based project, the fact that someone would do that is, I don't know, it's just a little shocking. "

Mayor Pete Buttigieg said he hopes as news spreads about the theft people will rally behind the project.  "You know that mural project is a really phenomenal thing and it's just really upsetting the ladders were stolen.  I have every expectation the community will step up."

For now the group of artists is doing what they can until the ladders can be replaced.
