Elkhart County crews battle duplex fire in Osolo Township

Elkhart County crews were called out to battle a duplex fire in Osolo Township. It broke out at approximately 3:36 Thursday morning on the 27000 block of County Road 4, which is just west of County Road 7 on Elkhart's north side.

It was called in as a garage fire, but when crews arrived they saw flames shooting out from the duplex. The good news is firefighters tells us no one was hurt, although they're not sure if the residents were away from their home at the time or if they evacuated.

Neighbors who called about the fire told dispatchers they heard explosions before firefighters arrived on the scene, but officials cold not confirm that. FOX28's Amir Abbas asked Osolo Township firefighter Randy Stone about a large hole toward the middle of the building, and whether an explosion could cause something like that.

"We can see that that is where the fire started," Stone said. "That's what we call the seed of the fire so it's going to burn more intensely. Were there vehicles in there? Were there vehicles that exploded? At this point we're not sure. That will be left up to investigation."

County Road 4 was closed while crews battled the blaze.
