Arson charges: man missing following fire found

Posted:

The man who went missing when his South Bend home caught fire has been charged with setting the blaze.

Douglas Wilcox was charged with Arson on Friday.  Wilcox's house on the 21000 block of Sandybrook Drive caught fire on August 12.

Though Wilcox was living in the home, he was not the owner.  The owner, Jeffrey Huyvaert, had bought the home in July during a Sheriff's Sale.  Huyvaert was letting Wilcox stay there while renovation were being done on the home.

When crews searched the area they found that Wilcox was not in the home and his car was gone.  The investigation of the fire found that it had been intentionally set.

Wilcox's daughter, Stephanie, reportedly came to police with a letter written in her father's handwriting that said, "Your mom built that house and no one else was going to get it.  I hope the new owner had insurance!!!"

Police say the found Wilcox in a Battle Creek, MI casino Friday morning, shortly after the warrant was issued.  Wilcox is being held in the Calhoun County Jail on $50,000 bond.  He is awaiting extradition back to St. Joseph County.
