Brian Kelly has not changed much between wins 1 and 200

Only 71 other college football coaches have ever won 200 games, but reached that mark faster than Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly.

In just 23 years as a head coach, Brian Kelly reached that mark Saturday as the Irish topped Temple 28-6.

"I haven't really taken the time to think about it other than a lot of the coaches that are with me today have been part of a lot of those wins and that's really special," said Kelly.

Tommy Rees will go into the record book as the quarterback who picked up the 200th win for Coach Kelly. Rees says the team was proud to help Kelly join the 200 win club.

"You know a couple of us knew about it before [the Temple game]," said Rees. "We didn't try and make a big deal about it, but it's a great accomplishment for coach and we're happy for him. We're happy we could be the team to get that done here."

Kelly's first win as a head coach came at Grand Valley State in 1991. Jack Hull, who was the quarterback for that GVS team, says the Lakers won their first game with Kelly at the helm. Hull also said that win was not much different from win 200.

"It was a good solid win," said Hull. "We covered all areas and won the game, but if you look back it maybe you say we could've done more."

Hull says he learned pretty quickly that Kelly expected a lot from his starting quarterback. He says when he sees Kelly getting into an Irish quarterback on the sidelines, it's not much different from his experiences. However, he also added Kelly is a great encourager.

"He makes it very clear if there's an error made or whatever he gets in your face," said Hull. "But at the same time he'll pat you on the back and tell you good job. It's not just the one side of it."

Hull was there to celebrate the 1st and the 200th wins with Coach Kelly. After the Temple game, Hull presented Kelly with a game ball commemorating the occasion.

Hull does not believe this will be the last coaching milestone Kelly will reach.

"He's been at multiple programs and had success quickly," said Hull. "He knows what he's doing. He has a system in place and he runs it well. Not just the coaching, but the recruiting and everything that goes along with it. He's got the whole package from a coaching standpoint."

Kelly will try and pick up win 201 on Sept. 7 when the Irish travel to Ann Arbor to take on rival Michigan.
