Dowagiac Department of Public Safety Dowagiac Department of Public Safety
A woman that police say broke into a Dowagiac home, assaulted a man, then left the home with a small child has been arraigned.
28-year-old Maria Milam has been charged with 1st degree Home Invasion, Domestic Assault, and Driving While License Suspended.
Around 10 Monday night, Dowagiac police officers were dispatched to a home in the 500 block of Hill street. Milam had forced her way into the home, assaulted the caller and took a small child, who police believe is the biological child of the suspect and the assault victim. Milam fled the scene in a car, but was stopped a short while later on Colby Street and arrested.
Although police believe the child is the biological child of the adults in this case, the adults do not live together. The child was not harmed in the incident, and neither was the adult male victim. The child was returned to the house on Hill street.
Milam is being held at the Cass County Jail on a $5,000 cash or surety bond. The case is still under investigation and if anyone has information on this case they should contact the Dowagiac Police Department or the Cass County Tip Line at (800)462-9328.
