Newly remodeled home catches fire in Edwardsburg

Posted:

An Edwardsburg homeowner has to pick up the pieces again after a fire rolled through early Friday morning.

It broke out around 2 am near the corner of Elkhart and Raymond Roads, which is just southeast of the city limits. When firefighters arrived on the scene they say it was fully engulfed in flames and FOX28's cameras caught fire and smoke shooting up from the roof.

No one was living in the home at the time. It was actually under construction after a tree fell through it sometime this spring. All the remodeling going on caused firefighters a lot of grief when they were trying to knock down the flames.

"It had been remodeled a couple of times and had a bunch of wood siding inside for paneling on the walls," said Edwardsburg Fire Chief Bruce Stack. "That made it tougher to get to the fire."

No one was hurt fighting the fire. The cause is still under investigation but as of this point firefighters say it does not look like anything suspicious. The Michigan State Fire Marshal will be handling the case.

Edwardsburg firefighters got help units in Porter Township in Cass County as well as Clay Township and Cleveland Township Fire Departments in Indiana.
