Purdue's Hazell optimistic, but realistic, about Notre Dame

Posted:

Notre Dame is ranked #21 and coming off a 41-30 loss at Michigan. Purdue is unranked and squeaked out a 20-14 win over Indiana State. (The same team that gave up 73 points to IU in week one).  While Coach Kelly preached "smarter and more disciplined" 6 times Saturday night after the Michigan game, Boilers Head Coach Darrell Hazell sounded optimistic but realistic Tuesday at his press conference in West Lafayette.

About the rivalry, he said, "It's really fun. To think how long this series has gone on, uninterrupted. I'd like it to continue every single year". About Notre Dame, he said, "They've got a great offensive line. Very simplistic. The key for us will be to not give up big plays and to make them earn every inch of the field".

Meanwhile, Brian Kelly met with the media at the same time in South Bend.  The Irish don't see this as big of game as Purdue. "We have five or six rivalry trophies sitting in our front office. Each and every week is a rivalry week," said The 4th year ND coach.  "I think any time you're playing a team in-state, there's certainly a recognition of that as a rivalry game."  Coach Hazell was the MAC Coach of the year last year at Kent State.  He said, "It's huge, the blimp is coming".

The early line has ND favored by 21 points.

Despite both teams having 1-1 records, this game will be broadcast nationally in prime time.  While Texas A&M and Alabama will be on in the afternoon, The Purdue vs ND game will go up against Cal vs Ohio State, which will be telecast on FOX nationally as part of our Saturday night football deal with the PAC 12.

FOX28 Sports Director Dean Huppert was in West Lafayette for the Purdue press conference.  He'll have more on Saturday's game tonight on FOX28 News at 10.
