President calls for delayed vote on Syria strike

President Obama has asked congress to wait on a vote for a military strike against Syria until after a diplomatic solution put forth by Russia is explored.

In his address to the nation Tuesday night, the president said that Syria has admitted it has chemical weapons, but will now join the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibits their use.

After the president said that he is asking Congress to "postpone" their vote on a military strike against Syria, he argued that the "credible threat" of the strike was part of the reason a diplomatic option arose.

"I have ordered our military to maintain their current posture to keep the pressure on Assad, and to be in a position to respond."

The president continued his effort to convince the American people that a military strike would be in the interest of national security.

"When dictators commit atrocities, they depend upon the world to look the other way until those horrifying pictures fade from memory," said the President.  He went on to say that not acting could lead to other tyrants feeling free to use chemical weapons in the future.

He urged every American to watch the videos of the atrocities committed in Syria.  "When we can stop children from being gassed to death and thereby make our own children safer over the long run, we should act."
