UPDATE: Driver killed in LaPorte Co. train and car crash

Posted:

A LaPorte man was killed early Thursday morning after his van was hit by a west train in Union Mills.  The crash happened just before 2:00am.

The LaPorte County Sheriff's Department says 40-year-old Brian Massengill had gotten his van stuck on the railroad crossing at State Road 39 near US-6.  That stretch of road is closed for construction.  Authorities say the man drove around barricades set up blocking the road.

Massengill was killed in the crash.  No one else was in the van at the time. Investigators have determined that Massengill had a blood alcohol concentration of .393% at the time of the crash.  That is near five times the legal limit.

The train crew said they sounded the horn on the train as they approached, but the van did not move.  The train was reportedly going about 45 miles per hour when it hit the van.  Police also say the lights and crossing arms were working properly at the crossing.
