South Bend Mayor deploying to Afghanistan

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg will be deployed to Afghanistan for several months in 2014.

The Mayor says he'll deploy on February 28, 2014. He's expected to return September 30.  The Mayor announced Thursday afternoon that City Comptroller Mark Neal with serve as Deputy Mayor while the mayor is deployed.

Buttigieg is a member of the Naval Reserves. He joined the service in 2009. He's served on active duty for 12 days in both 2012 and 2013. Following his 2012 deployment, Buttigieg told FOX28 News he served with a unit that does analysis to support efforts to combat terrorism.

Senator Joe Donnelly thanked the mayor for his service in a written statement.  "In Indiana, we have a proud tradition of heeding the call to protect and defend our country, and I thank all Hoosiers who are currently or have previously been a member of our Armed Forces," said Senator Donnelly.

Congresswoman Jackie Walorski also expressed her appreciation to Mayor Buttigieg in a written statement. "Dean and I extend our deepest appreciation to Mayor Pete Buttigieg for answering our nation's call to serve, and express our best wishes to him and his family during this deployment.  We join the City of South Bend to thank the mayor for both his public and military service in our communities and abroad, and look forward to his safe return to Northern Indiana," Walorski said.
