South Bend celebrates police and fire appreciation day

Police and firefighters from Saint Joseph County walked away with full stomachs and smiles on their faces Friday.  It was the 16th annual Police and Fire Appreciation Day.  The event is put on by the Community Oriented Policing Leadership Council, to show their support and appreciation to the men and women who serve our community.

The Chair of Community Oriented Policing Leadership Council, Phyllis Fields says the event is a little way to let the police and fire know they are appreciated.  "The guys really appreciate it and they give us hugs and say thank you," Fields said, "This year they are having river rescue training here and these guys don't have this thing at home so they are really impressed."

Leaders in the community like Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Prosecutor Michael Dvorak were serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the men and women.  The group expected to serve up to 150 people during the days event.
