New Prairie schools recognized for Chinese language classes

The New Prairie United School Corporation had a dedication ceremony today for their designation as a Confucius Classroom.

The designation comes from Hanban, the education arm of the Chinese government. Hanban recognizes exemplary Chinese language programs that can serve as a model for developing Chinese language and culture teaching in American schools.

New Prairie Middle School principal Jim Holifield says the recognition also comes with financial and teaching support. The school district will receive $20,000 to help expand their Mandarin programs. They are also entitled to one Mandarin teacher per year if needed.

Holifield says they are looking at extending the Mandarin curriculum to Mandarin 5 if student demand calls for it.

Holifield says that although some parents expressed concern about the focus on Chinese language learning, most parents embrace the program now.

New Prairie is the sixth Indiana school to be designated as a Confucius Classroom and one of less than a hundred nationwide.
