Councilmen and neighbors discuss possible South Bend crematorium

In South Bend members of the community gathered on Monday night to talk about a proposed crematorium in the 6th district.

Council Member Oliver Davis invited neighbors to voice their concerns about the new business, after one group of neighbors, who live in the area of South William Street, started a petition against it.

Neighbors have several concerns, including property value of their homes, possible smell from an incinerator, and seeing bodies transported from funeral homes.

Heather Frost lives near the proposed location. "Our property value keeps going down. How much more is going to go down?" she says. "My husband and I have done a lot of research. we're looking at 15 to 20 more percent."

One of the funeral directors working on the project addressed some of the concerns, saying there would not be an odor coming from the building because an after burner on the incinerator would take care of 99% of the smell. He also noted that a privacy fence and closing garage doors would prevent anyone from seeing bodies.

Patrick Nowak, Zahoran Funeral Home Director says "We want to help and serve the public. This is a growing need in our community, but we also want to be good neighbors."

The South Bend common council will be voting next Monday on whether or not to go forward with the plans for the crematorium.

If the plan is approved, the crematorium would take about 8-10 weeks to complete and would be finished by mid to late November.
