South Bend plane crash: 6 months later

Posted:

On March 17, 2013 a plane crashed into a South Bend neighborhood, killing two people on board.

"I ran to the front and it was just a big cloud of insulation and plane parts and everything flying," said Mary Jane Klaybor on March 17th.

Luckily, no one on the ground was killed, but two homes in the 1600 block of Iowa Street had to be demolished. "They're probably gonna, they're gonna tear it down," said homeowner Patricia Kobalski back in March.

Six months later, a lot, with only a couple of sheds and a vehicle sit there.

Frank Sojka has lived in this home on Iowa Street for 55 years.

He says March 17th was just like any other quiet Sunday, and then the plane crash happened.

"I came out and looked and the south end of the house, I could see the sun, you know, through the roof," says Sojka.

Sojka says things are pretty much back to normal for him.

It took about three months but the south end of his home has been repaired.

He needed a new living room and kitchen, plus a new roof, garage and siding.

He hopes he can soon say the same for the empty lot next door.

"Oh, I'd like to see them rebuild," says Sojka.

That's a big question hanging out there. We contacted the two women who lived in the homes that were demolished to get an update on how they're doing and see if they're planning to rebuild. We haven't heard back yet.

Other neighbors say they hope the lots don't just sit empty. They hope maybe something like a park or memorial can be built there.

Another homeowner told us that things are about as normal as they're going to be. He says he's still bothered every time a plane lands or takes off.

The NTSB hasn't released the full report on the crash yet. It could take another six months.
