Penn Spell Bowl opens with win at East Noble

It wasn't pretty but Penn High School's Spell Bowl squad opened its 2013 season with a win at the East Noble Invitational on Monday night in Kendallville.

The Kingsmen topped a 12-team field with a score of 86 out of a possible 90.

Seven PHS varsity spellers recorded perfect scores.  They were Richard Jung, Nitin Arora, Kanika Arora, Peter Jung, Max Kirsch, Chris Yun and Disha Waghray.  Two junior varsity spellers from Penn also were perfect.  They are Emily Vetne and Hannah McGinness.

For Penn, the win was its 77th invitational title dating back to 1994 and its 104th championship in its last 119 competitions.

The final standings were:

     1.)  Penn --86

     2.)  East Noble --50

     3.)  Ft. Wayne Dwenger --33

     4.)  Garrett--31

     5.)  Carroll--27

     6.)  Northwood--26

     7.)  Ft. Wayne Snider--24

     8.)  Logansport--20 (tie)

     8.)  Northridge--20  (tie)

     8.)  Ft. Wayne North Side--20 (tie)

   11.)  Prairie Heights--17

   12.)  Columbia City-13

Next up for the Kingsmen will be the Winamac Invitational of Monday, Sept. 23 followed by the Penn Invitational on Sept. 26.
