Train hits car on South Bend's east side

The South Bend Fire Department is on the scene of an accident involving a car and a train on the city's east side.

It happened around 11:45 pm on the 1500 block of Leer Street, which is just one block south of Lincolnway. Crews on the scene tell FOX28 the engineer was the first one to spot the red Volvo station wagon on the tracks.

When firefighters arrived there was no one in the car. At this point, we're told firefighters will stay on the scene until railroad officials can make it out to the crash site to conduct their investigation.

When we learn new details on the crash we'll bring them to you both on air and online at
