Elementary students celebrate International Day of Peace

Posted:

International Day of Peace is September 21st. Since Pinewood Elementary School students would be home on the day, administrators decided to celebrate a day early with a short assembly and Peace Walk.

"It's our kick-off to our Olweus Bullying Prevention Program that we have at school, reminding kids of the bully rules, reminding kids that if they're ever in trouble at school, they need to tell an adult at home and at school," says Assistant Principal Carla Hochstetler.

The assembly opened with the kids singing Toy Story's "You've Got a Friend in Me." While many of the younger students were unfamiliar with the song, older students embraced each other and sang while swaying from side to side.

"It was fun because everyone got dressed up and it was colorful," says sixth grader Ellie Malloy.

Throughout the presentation, kids decked out in tie-dye and peace sign shirts waved posters and construction paper peace signs. Malloy says the assembly taught her some good lessons.

"I learned that you should help others when they're being bullied and not watch it happen," says Malloy. "You also shouldn't be a bully either, because it's mean and you wouldn't want it to happen to yourself. So don't do it to others."

That ties right into one of the Pinewood Anti-Bully Rules that a teacher had the students recite at the end of the assembly.

  1. We will not bully others.
  2. We will help others when they are bullied.
  3. We will include everyone.
  4. When we know someone is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and at home.

The students then walked around the school for a peace walk. They came to a stop where a group of parents waited with ink pads and stamps to signify "stamping out" bullying.
