Hesburgh Library throws a party to celebrate its 50th anniversary

The Notre Dame campus celebrated a big milestone for one of its landmarks. The Hesburgh Library celebrated its 50th anniversary today.

And the year long celebrations kicked off with a big party in the Richard and Margaret Carey courtyard.

The library opened in September 1963 and was dedicated in May 1964.

If you're not familiar with Notre Dame's campus...the library features the mural -- affectionately known as touchdown Jesus.

"This library when Father Hesburgh envisioned it..it was quite a bold statement," said Edward H. Arnold University Librarian Diane Walker. "It was a very large building for what then was a small college campus. And we think it was one of the largest library buildings on a campus when it was built."

If you were not able to party today..don't worry you can still stay up to date on future events.
