SBPD to hold Citizen's Police Academy Tuesday

South Bend police want their department and people in the community to be on the same page. That's one of the reasons they're inviting people to join the Citizen's Police Academy.

It's a 9-week course that meets on Tuesday nights from 6 to 8:30. Classes are free but they're limited to 40 people and there are some restrictions.

  • Participants must be at least 18 years of age
  • Have no prior felony convictions (certain misdemeanors may also disqualify you)
  • You are subject to criminal history check

Participants will get hands-on training from K-9, SWAT, and Bomb Disposal Units. They'll also learn about crime scene processing, when to shoot and when to not shoot a gun, narcotics enforcement, patrol operations and communications.

If you're interested in the program you do have to sign up in advance. You can find download an application on the police department's website.
