Local Democratic Chair resigns

Posted:

Local Democrats are losing a key leader.  State Senator John Broden has resigned from his position as Chair of the Saint Joseph County Democratic Party.

Broden says he doesn't have the necessary time to devote to the position.  "I think one of the important things I've learned about the job is that you definitely need to be able to balance your time, unless you're going to make this your full-time task, which I hope everyone knows it is not a paid position," says Broden.

The Saint Joseph County Republican Party issued a statement in response to Broden's announcement.  "I believe that a Senator Broden is a good man and that he ultimately wants what is best for this community, we just disagree on how to get there. He has been a worthy and respectful political adversary," said GOP Chairwoman Deb Fleming.

"It was my understanding that he didn't want the job in the first place," said Jake Teshka, the GOP's Executive Director. "The Democrats in this county are in complete disarray. They are divided. There have always been rival factions within their party, but Butch Morgan was able to hold it all together. Now that he is in jail, it has fallen apart: Mayor Buttigieg has angered most of the community, the party has been mired in scandals, Republicans picked up seats in the 2012 election and, from what we understand there is a lot of infighting going on. So, I don't blame Senator Broden for wanting to step down."

His resignation will be effective in the next couple of weeks.  Broden's successor will be chosen by the Precinct and Vice Chairs of the Saint Joseph County Democratic Party.
